Radio Frequency Identification allows data to be stored and retrieved usually for the purpose of monitoring, tracking or learning about a specific item. The data transmitted can provide identification, location and other information.

A basic RFID system consists of the following components :

	Tag, which is electronically programmed with unique information
	Reader, which can both read & write information from or onto the tag
	Antenna, Which permits the tag to exchange data with the reader
	Connection, which link the information to the IT system
